Part 1: Boulder riot on October 30th on the Hill....where else would it be?

I always joked about taking "Rioting 101" in Boulder right before I transferred here from CU-Denver two years ago.

I never thought I'd actually see one.

Especially my senior year of college.

And one this big.

Here's what happened. Jesse, Travis, Londyn and I were going up to the Hill after Amanda's Halloween party. We were going up to the Hill just to stop by Tom's party and see how things were going.

There were massive amounts of people on the Hill but that is typical of a party night ont he Hill. (Note: Loki just called me, he pulled an all nighter with his show and then driving people home this morning. He was shocked to hear how big this riot was. I was shocked to learn he's been tear gased 6 times since he's lived in Boulder. Poor Loki!) The amount of people was insane on the hill, imagine a city block packed with people and that begins to give you an idea.

We parked just off 9th and College, because I am an idiot and I knew Tom's house was the Hill....exactly where ...I wasn't sure. We knew the address but not the cross-streets.

So we began to walk on 9th toward College and right next to the cemetary there were about 30-40 cops piling out of a parked van, in full riot gear. I just remember saying "whoa." and stopping dead in my tracks. As we walked down College toward 10th a slightly hysterical girl on her cell phone screamed "I wouldn't go that way!!" We all stopped and aske her why. "There is a huge riot on 10th and College, I wouldn't go that way!", she replied. "But we have to get to a friend's house.", we said. "Forget it. I'd get the hell out of here or go around."

We tooke her frantic advise and walked down 9th toward University. We could hear people yelling and screaming. There was no way we wanted to be near this riot so we decided to get around or at least get as far away from it as possible....

Next installment in a bit...

Hi Steppie!
My dad and I were talking about the riots and we were wondering what you do if you don't want to break the law. It is illegal to participate in a riot(duh), but it is also illegal to watch a riot. This leaves you with one option, leaving the riot, but this could also be called leaving the scene of a crime which is illegal. What's a law abiding citizen to do?
