Life changing experience

Alright, I've been either exausted or extremely busy since the whole music lab things and school and so I will recont for you the amazing experience that has changed my life.

As par Melanna's request, I will explain what exactly the "Red Bull Music Labs" is. There is a detailed article by Red Bull here but here's my version.

---
The RBML only visits five cities each year. They have three music mentors, the best studio equipment you can imagine and each student has a Dell Inspiron laptop, O-zone midi keyboard and a pair of headphones. Each laptop has the program Reason, Recycle and Sound Forge 7. Only 10 students in each city are accepted from the applicants. Our RBML was held in a place called Immersive Studios in way hell north Boulder. The goal of the 5 day workshop is to create a track using entirely your own beats, samples, etc. No copywritten music/samples. Then Red Bull creates a CD of all the tracks to distribute to other cities to promo for the next RBML. They have a huge after-party at the end and debut all the tracks.

Our music mentors were:
Lorin/Bassnectar - Lorin? Lorin is an amazing mentor. He was out teacher and guide for the 5 days of the program. He taught us Reason, Recycle and Sound Forge. As a DJ, Lorin has played on the playa during Burning Man, LoveParade which can get up to 1.5 million attendees, he does huge shows, he's been constantly touring for the past 6 years around the world. I had never heard the name and then when I listened to his music, I recognized it. Lorin is an awesome sweet guy, and he know how to party. ;)

Craig - We teased eachother and butted head constantly during the experience. It was great. He's very passionate about music and kind of the ying to Lorin's yang. He knows alot about musical theory and equipment.

Paul Anthony - Paul is the CEO of RumbleFish, he was funny, smart, just a fun guy to talk to. He has created the multimillion dollar company and he's 26.

So all the days blend into eachother but here you go:

Wednesday,
Time we are supposed to be at the lab: 4pm-12am, Time I was working: 4pm-12:30am

I took the bus to get to the lab, it was frigged. I have a google map in one hand, Ipod in the other. I walk around looking for the place, and cannot find it anywhere.
I see this guy on a bike with a floresent fuzzy leporad print hoodie on his bike, looking around. "Are you here for the Red Bull Music Lab?" he called out.
"Yeah!"
He see some buisness men "I am going to go ask these guys" he runs after them.

Meanwhile a car pulls up, this guy leans over and says "Music labs??"
"yup, we can't find it either."
By this time the guy on the bike is coming back "Yup, it's on the other side of the circle, around the back." He hops back on his bike.
"Are you on foot?" the guy in the car asks me.
"Um, yeah."
"Hop in!"
"Thanks" I get in his car.

We drive about 5 feet and I see a familiar face. It's Shervin from Radio 1190, he does Chunk of Funk and is our Student General Manager.

I roll down the window "Shervin! You are here for the labs too?!"
"Yep!"
The driver says "You wanna hop in? Just dive through the window..."
Shervin walks over "Uh okay...." I roll down the window completely and Shervin dive in head first.
We drive over to the labs, get out and walk in to Immersive Studios.

At the door we are greeted by Geoff (the Colorado Manager of Distribution), Jennifer (Red Bull Marketing), Victor (PR at Red Bull), David (Equipment manager and 'Den Dad'), Lorin, Craig, and Maddy (Marketing/PR at Red Bull). The tell us to head upstairs and grab some snacks if we'd like.

So we are chillin and hanging out. The guy in the car is Mitch, he's from Minnesota, loves 80's music, plays guitar and sings, he's a CU-Student. The guy with the crazy hoodie is Moses or Mo, he's 32, a massage therapist, grew up on a hippie commune in South Carolina and wants to make hick-hop. An then Shervin, loves funk, is a cool guy, I've known him for a few years.

We are hanging out and talking to Geoff for a while, more people show up and we finally have all the participants except one, who they say is Sean Choi (at which point, Shervin and my faces lit up) and will be joining us later.

We go around the room an introduce ourselves, saying where we are from, etc.

Mitch- told you about him
Jeff - from Arvada, loves hip-hop, writes his own lyrics and was never able to come up with his own beats.
Jorge - from Mexico City, is a DJ by profession and does alot of turntablism.
Eric - 30 someodd. Loves Drum & Bass.
Shervin - told you about him.
Mo - told you about him.
Chris - seen him around the station before, he DJs hip-hop as DJ Varja. Goes to CU-Boulder.
Ian - from Lakewood, loves electronic music, goes to Red Rocks, computer guru. Is doing graphic design. After introduction I talked to Ian and we figured out our Matt connection.

I was the only girl. How cool is that. :)

So Lorin and the crew introduce themselves and lay down the rules of the studio. Lorin then teaches us stuff Miyagi style until midnight and introduces us to Reason. Our minds are blown. We learn basic drum kits and loop players. We worked until a little past midnight and then Shervin gave me a ride home. I talked about the music labs with people on my floor until 2 in the morning.

Oh my darling Steppie. You could be the first DJ in space. Multi talented and fab. I know we chatted on the phone about this, but I love reading about it too. I'm SO excited with you, and you are so deserving of this. I really hope it just keeps getting better and better. Remember, caffeine is your friend ;-) I'm so excited to hear more. btw, Jeff from Arvada... on the off chance I know him, what's his last name?
