A few things I have neglected to mention lately. So in my profile I put that I am now a "GIS pimp" and I thought I'd explain why.
I am taking this awesome class from Henrietta (one of the great geology profs) on GIS. Oh, for those who don't know GIS is it stands for Geolographical Information Systems. Basically it is like uber map builidng etc. You can do so many things using GIS. The class is great.
Also I started a mentorship with another professor in the department usins Lidar (sp?) which is laser created maps of the side of an exposed rock face (outcrop). The job is to overlay the coordinates with photography and pick out the rock layers. They are using this data to see the way fluid (ie oil) would move through rock.
So finally what makes me a GIS pimp, is that I might be doing my honors thesis on a GIS project. This will be using arial photography to look at the way gullies have grown through the years. Once I have picked out the gullies in an area and mapped them out, I will overlay those gullies onto a geologic map and see what sediments those gullies cut through and what sediments they grow in. But I still need to talk to Alan (my geology advisor) about if I can even do an honors thesis....f--kin' GPA. It sits just below a 3.0 which i think is what i need to do a thesis.
I was talking to Henrietta about Volcanoes and grad school. She said that if I really want to do Vulcanology on Mars that I should consider going to the University of Hawaii. Let's see....hmmm 4 years in Hawaii with the beautiful surf and working with active volcanoes. Heck yeah! So I need to investigate their program. And I hope the have a radio station on campus, that would kick ass if they do. :) Wish I could go and visit the campus.
Yeah like that is going to happen.
